"The good news is that we have effective treatments for
the symptoms of depression;
the bad news is that medication will not make you happy. Happiness
is not simply the absence of despair.
It is an affirmative state in which our lives have both meaning
and pleasure.
So medication
is seldom enough. People also need to look at the way they
are living with an eye to change. We are always talking
about what we want, what we intend. These are dreams and
wishes and are of little value in changing our mood. We
are not what we think, or what we say, or how we feel. We
are what we do."

Welcome to the March The
Wave Riders Newsletter.
I could not help but send to you the links to some of the
many reference articles that I frequently come across on the
Internet that mention the negative side effects of some of
the drugs that we are prescribed. Scroll
down to read Interesting notes on medications including an
Acne medication linked to suicide.
But first a little success note that was sent into me just
recently after months of dedicated Wave Riding steps that
I would like to share so that you will continue to do your
great work.
Hi Indigo thought it would be nice to have a catch up.
Wave riding is improving all the time - I am beginning to
reap the benefits of living at the mid wave - and I am loving
it. There have been a lot of very challenging things to get
through in 2006 already and I feel I have done OK.
I am taking resposibility a lot better now that I know How
and being less inclined to give myself an out. I say 'you
are strong enough to do this' (perhaps go to work which is
the thing today and a lot of days) now off you go and do it.
The less I am opting out the stronger my belief is becoming
that I don't need to. My work is not full time and I have
made sure that it isnt. I don't work on Mondays and start
late in the day most days so it allows for down time - silent
time....
So the groundswell of strength is building I am able to be
comitted, which is what i have always wanted and which has
always eluded me. Not being able to be consistent is behind
most of the shame and lack that I have experienced at times
making me feel I should not bother to go on at times - for
more of the same.
So things are looking up and I am finding the strength to
also deal to those bad old conditioned messages when they
come up which is amazing.
I feel I am becoming more of a person and less of a reaction
all the time.
Living life - like driving a car - will never be risk free.
Our only hope is in paying attention and being skillful.
Thank you (L) for sharing and keep up the great work!(name
withheld for privacy)

Medications - what will they fill
us up with now.
While studies often show that
a sugar pill (placebo) and therapy have just as effective
a result to the medication we are still risking serious harm
in an attempt to quickly alter our mood...to do anything to
help. There is not enough good/positive therapies to help
so we are often prescribed medication as the first line of
defense. I am not against medication...I am all for using
what helps when it is necessary and for keeping informed of
the dangers and the test results. All of the notes below were
found on the Internet and though many appear to be from good
sources they have not been verified. If you are concerned,
read the articles and verify for yourself the information
with medical authorities. If medication is helping you please
do not take ofense by these comments I simply want to keep
readers informed.
Becaues of the information found,
this month's newsletter is mostly about checking out the dangers
of medication. It is very important that you stay on top of
any medication that you are on and never go off medication
without consulting with your doctor as there can be serious
consequences including suicidal tendancies. The following
articles are things I have found on the Internet that may
interest you in regards to medication...from "a Serotonin
overdose" ( discussing that it might not always be good
to increase Serotonin) to "Serequel linked to causing
diabetes"
Whether you are on medication or trying to handle your up
and down waves on without medication you need to remember
this is a battle against yourself. It is against the worshipping
of the up high energy and the giving into the negative side
when we are exhausted. Even with medication you will need
a dedicated committment to change your view on things around
you and in some cases change your life. Scroll down to read
more about the potentially dangerous side effects and unusual
finding on medications.
If you can - please keep in touch

Zoloft works by regulating
serotonin in the brain, but too much serotonin can lead to
a life-threatening side effect called
serotonin syndrome. Website reference: http://www.adrugrecall.com/newsletter/jun04/zoloft.html
Serotonin syndrome
is described in the literature as a potentially serious drug-related
condition characterized by a number of mental, autonomic and
neuromuscular changes.1 Although serotonin syndrome can cause
death, the condition is mild in most persons, and with supportive
care alone they tend to recover completely. The syndrome,
first described in animal models in the 1950s, was referred
to as the "serotonin behavioral" or "hyperactivity
syndrome."1 Reports of serotonin syndrome in humans followed,
and have become increasingly frequent since the 1960s. The
earliest reports involved persons who were taking monoamine
oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs). Some of the early reports included
patients who were also taking tryptophan, a serotonin precursor.1,2
Serotonin syndrome is most often
reported in patients taking two or more medications that increase
CNS serotonin levels by different mechanisms. The most common
drug combinations associated with serotonin syndrome involve
the MAOIs, selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs),
and the tricyclic antidepressants.3 Because of the dramatic
rise in the use of SSRIs, it is predicted that emergency room
physicians are going to encounter the serotonin syndrome more
frequently than in the past.1

| Depression no longer carries
the stigma it once did. The number of people diagnosed with
depression since the 1980s has tripled,
also due in part to education and public awareness. Everywhere
you look, there are advertisements for antidepressants, including
Zoloft, Prozac, and Paxil, which have become common names to
most people. Thus, the competition between drug companies to
gain an edge over their competitors has also increased.
Through the 1990s, more than
half the drug company studies on antidepressants
showed they were no better than a sugar pill. In 1998,
a scientist at Pfizer, maker of Zoloft, found that "all
SSRIs have the rare potential to cause akathisia."
(Note: Akathisia is an often
extremely unpleasant subjective sensation of "inner"
restlessness that manifests itself with an inability to sit
still or remain motionless, hence its the origin of its name:
Greek a (without) + kithesia (to sit http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Akathisia
)
When referring to the most extreme
cases, the scientist wrote that the patients might feel "death
is a welcome result". The Zoloft and other antidepressant
drug controversy have escalated into a legal battle. Zoloft
lawsuits and other SSRI related lawsuits have continued to
be argued.
February 2, 2004, an FDA advisory
committee will hold yet another hearing regarding the risk
of suicide by people taking antidepressants, like Zoloft.
For many families, the battle against antidepressant drug
companies has been frustrating, especially since the February
2, 2004 hearing will be 13 years after the 1991 Prozac hearings
first convened to discuss violence and suicide reports.

| Serzone antidepressant
drug has been linked to reports of death and severe liver failure.
Potentially hundreds of Serzone deaths and injuries have occurred,
but because of the high number of unreported cases thought to
occur, countless patients may have suffered. In 2002 alone,
2.8 million Serzone prescriptions were filled in the U.S. In
addition to hepatic risks, Serzone, when used by children is
believed to cause in increase in suicide risk.

| Accutane (a medicine used
to treat acne only included due to it's suicide side effect)
has been a controversial acne medication because of the serious
risk of side effects and suicides attributed to it. ....
Since 1982, there have been 142 suicides involving Accutane.
The FDA has required that doctors and patients sign a lengthy
consent form prior to beginning Accutane therapy acknowledging
they have been informed of the dangers. Other side effects of
Accutane include brain problems, abdomen problems, bone and
muscle problems, hearing problems, vision problems, lipids or
fats and cholesterol in blood problems, and allergic reactions.

In 2004, four medical societies
named Seroquel as
one of six anti-psychotic drugs that promote diabetes,
obesity or high cholesterol. In February's issue of the journal,
Diabetes Care , the American Diabetes Association, the American
Psychiatric Association, the North American Association for
the Study of Obesity, and the American Association of Clinical
Endocrinologists warned that Seroquel users should be watched
carefully to ensure that they are not developing diabetes.
Additionally, doctors prescribing Seroquel should screen patients
carefully for a history of obesity and diabetes in the patient
and family, as well as the patient's weight, blood pressure,
and cholesterol levels.
