Today's Gentle Reminder
I frequently try to get in a morning swim at our local pool and often the five or six lanes that are open for laps are overcrowded. Occasionally, a lane opens up to offer you the bliss of swimming without others splashing and banging into you. I enjoy the lanes that are labeled for the slow to medium swimmer. Often I will avoid the fast lane, but I am not afraid to jump in and take advantage of the opportunity to have the lane all to myself if I happen to see that the fast lane is empty. So, I suppose you would call me a lane switcher, never really sticking to one particular lane.

I found it interesting to watch the number of people that come each day and ..."have been doing so for 30 some odd years", one fellow said. They come at the same time of day and place their swim fins and goggles on the deck, in the same spot as they have every day. This same fellow, pauses, looks over at all the lanes in the pool, and finally will choose the same lane he has every day for "some 30 odd years".

One day, I watched this same fellow look over the pool. His favorite lane was overcrowded, people trying to swim past one another almost bumping heads. It was like a great water freeway, people passing, near crashes and rough bumps. The lane next to his favorite lane was empty, calm, a beautiful opportunity to swim without anyone slowing you down or speeding you up.

The man, picked up his goggles, placed them on his head and over his eyes, just the same way I had seen him do so many times before, and slipped into the already overcrowded lane. It was after all his lane, he had "done it this way for some 30 odd years now". I watched for awhile and noticed that he frequently had to stop and wait for others to pass or to speed up. He cursed under his breath, likely ruined his swim for the day, but still he did not change lanes.

We often, in life, blindly choosing the same negative patterns and then we wonder, as we curse under our breath, why our lives are not improving. Let's not be afraid, simply because we have never tried it before, to switch our pattern into something new and positive. We might find that we like it and that new and wonderful experiences enter our lives!

Wishing you calm and glorious waters.
Take care of yourself.
Indigo

Quote of the month

"Acquire the courage to believe in yourself. Many of the things that you have been taught were at one time the radical ideas of individuals who had the courage to believe what their own hearts and minds told them was true, rather than accept the common beliefs of their day."

Ching Ning Chu (Chinese-American businesswoman, lecturer, author)
