The
Wave Rider's Gift - Is it the answer to Job Security in a
Changing World?
A natural evolutionary response to a changing world!
What if "evolution"
has been doing the "right thing" for our future
survival by increasing the number of creative minds in the
world but, what if at the same time human beings are doing
everything possible, at the risk of our own peril, to stop
the benefits of this evolutionary growth. We are stopping
this evolutionary growth by medication millions of the same
creative minds that evolution is trying to create?
We are educating creativity out of our children by using a
system that was originally designed to create an army of people
that would "follow the rules" rather than create
new ones. Archaic lesson plans are more frequent than experimentation
and innovation.
Creativity expert Sir Ken Robinson
stated: that "Creativity now is as important in education
as literacy and we should treat it with the same status."
We are medicating our children
so that they can sit without moving in their chairs and pay
attention to an archaic school system.
In a very sad story, that I
read on the Internet, of a young boy that died from the side
effects of Ritalin; a common drug used "keep children
in their seats" the father explained how he felt as the
school advised him about his child:
"
Monica told us that
if we refused to take Matthew to the doctor and get him on
Ritalin, child protective services could charge us for neglecting
his educational and emotional needs. My wife and I were intimidated
and scared. We believed that there was a very real possibility
of losing our children if we did not comply with the schools
threats."

It is not just the children,
we are medicating ourselves into numbness.
In "Comfortably Numb: How
Psychiatry Medicated a Nation", Charles Barber states:
"
perceptions of mental
health issues have changed dramatically over the last fifteen
years, and nowhere is this more apparent than in the rampant
overmedication of ordinary Americans. In 2006, 227 million
antidepressant prescriptions were dispensed in the United
States, more than any other class of medication; in that same
year, the United States accounted for 66 percent of the global
antidepressant market
.
Americans are under (increasing
pressure) to medicate themselves (direct-to-consumer advertising,
fewer nondrug therapeutic options, the promise of the quick
fix, and the blurring of distinction between mental illness
and everyday problems).
Evolution seemed to know that
our old rules don't work anymore. It knows that we can no
longer rely on large companies for our job security. Evolutions
knows that we cannot just "work harder" to pay the
bills we have to work more creatively.
The world is changing so fast
that we can no longer guarantee that our education will prepare
us for the future. For some students their "degrees"
may be obsolete by the time they graduate. With the internet
only thousands of days old we can see the possibility of more
change is enevitable.
With all this uncertainty what
can we do for our future "job and lifestyle security"?
The answer for a secure future
and an economically viable world is: to harness creativity
and nurture innovation and we must learn how to use our creativity
while maintaining balance.
We cannot allow the medical
profession, education system and drug companies to tell us
to medicate, medicate and medicate to suppress the Gene associated
with creativity because "it causes unstable lifestyles"
.
Instead we need to learn and
teach how to "ride the waves" as I like to call
it. We need to learn how our lifestyles need to be altered
to enable us to use this creativity without mental and physical
harm.
That is why I wrote "The
Wave Riders" book.
The world is changing rapidly
and innovation is needed to adapt.
Can you see the conflict?
We need creativity to flourish but instead of adapting our
systems we have decided to adapt and numb our brain's creative
processes by the use of medication!
The good news is that some systems
are changing!
City Park High School in Saskatoon,
Saskatchewan in Canada put treadmills and exercise bikes into
a math classroom with fantastic results increasing the student's
attention levels and learning abilities without medication.
"
before doing any
math, the kids strapped on their heart-rate monitors and did
20 minutes of moderate intensity cardiovascular exercise.
This is an alternative school for those with learning difficulties,
and over half the students have ADHD. They couldn't sit still,
many had behavioural problems, and they couldn't learn. Well,
the cardio equipment went in the classroom in February, and
by June, pretty much all the kids had jumped a full grade
in reading, writing and math. After doing the exercise the
kids were suddenly able to sit still and focus on what they
were learning, and they were able to understand what they
were being taught. The exercise altered their brain chemistry
enough to make learning possible, AND it greatly improved
their behaviour. Source: http://blog.wellnesstips.ca/blog/?p=216
It is not just treadmills: Math
and Judo, Math and dance are all new combinations that allow
us to educate without medication.
A 12-week study of 62 third
and fourth graders found that after 10-minutes of movement-based
exercise students were more attentive. http://www.education.com/magazine/article/Can_Jumping_Help_Your_Kids_Learn/
On the CBC.ca website Dr. John
Ratey, clinical associate professor of psychiatry at Harvard
Medical School, explains how sustained aerobic exercise promotes
learning:
"Exercise work in many
ways on the brain
. Addresses the attention system and
the impulse system
people are shaper, their more attentive,
their less impulsive, less fidgety and they can sustain their
attention longer.
Exercise makes our (brain) cells
more ready to do their job
brain cells major job
in terms of learning and memory is to change " adapt"
we call it and that means to grow" Exercise creates the
best environment for change when we learn anything we change
our brain. Exercise promotes Neurogenesis: growing new brain
cells
and nothing does it better than exercise."
When I wrote the book "The
Wave Riders" I was introducing a theory that maybe we
were given a gift; the gift of creativity but that we just
did not know how to balance that gift. The awareness of how
our minds and bodies process creativity and adrenaline enabled
us to begin to balance.
We have been given the gift to survive the future. Hidden
in our natural talents and creative processes are the very
tools that we will need to create innovative solutions and
to adapt to the ever changing world. You do not have to rely
on the corporations for your survival - simply look in side
and begin to nurture that which you love to do while maintaining
the balance of exercise and nutrition and of course learn
to use "The Wave Rider Tools", become part of The
Wave Riders community and communicate your struggles and your
successes.
A note of caution; Never stop taking medication cold turkey
it can spiral you into depression and suicidal thought. Always
work with your doctor to monitor your medication.
The Wave Rider theory is simply
a theory that I have and is not meant to be a subsitute for
medical assistance.

However, there's a significant
academic component to all the jostling and physical activity
as the students are also engaged in a practical application
of mathematics and geometry to their martial arts exercises.
Combining math and judo is the innovative approach to scholastics
developed by teacher Bill Broten to stimulate interest among
students who have struggled with mathematical concepts in
the classroom. In addition to learning math, the program also
provides an opportunity for students to earn their yellow
belt in judo. http://www.lotwenterprise.com/ArticleDisplay.aspx?e=1579704
Mahar's 12-week study of 62

exercise students were more attentive. The study showed the
program worked especially well for students least on-task
before the activity. "I
think this study shows teachers that they can have their kids
be physically active in class and not only maintain academic
performance, but improve it," Mahar says. http://www.education.com/magazine/article/Can_Jumping_Help_Your_Kids_Learn/
