Our grown-up Easter Hunt
- The Hunt for our Hidden Treasures.
This is the Easter Holiday in
many countries and it is a time for new beginnings. A common
tradition during this time is the Easter egg hunt where we
roam around the yard or house looking for chocolate treats
that the Easter bunny left in the night. While I still love
the chocolate and might have to set out my own chocolate eggs,
my daughter is older and prefers sleeping in rather than waking
to the excitement of what the Easter Bunny has left hidden.
I was thinking back to a day
when I was cooking sausages and my daughter who was very young
at the time, said "mom, why don't they make those sausages
square"? Though a square sausage doesn't seem as appealing
to me, I thought it was a good idea and would simplify having
to constantly fight the sausage to cook on all sides evenly.
The round sausage was acceptable to me because it is what
I expect a sausage to be. I have even come to accept a sausage
patty but a square sausage was not appetizing maybe because
it stretched my "acceptability factor" just a little
too far. It is just not the way things are done here!
Today rather than the traditional
Easter egg hunt I thought I would do a different grown up
Easter hunt. Let's pretend that the Easter Bunny has left
a trail for you to find the things that you have implemented
into your life from habit and not necessarily because they
are better
Let's look around and hunt down
what is hidden from our view that we accept as "normal"
but that actually could be done/should be a different way.
In all aspects of our lives, like the square sausages to replace
the difficult to cook round sausage, there are many possibilities
and opportunities to change and improve what we do.
In business, for example you
might have a tour of teens through and explain to them your
methods while listening for suggestions or questions like,
"why do you do it this way?" Let the teens give
you alternatives. These teens may offer a simpler way of doing
what you do using the knowledge that they carry within their
generation. It has been said that the best way to check out
your efficiency is to hire someone who knows nothing about
what you do. Often people in the profession are jaded by training
into believing this is the way it has always been done and
will always be done and so they do not put their creativity
to the process. Someone who does not know your business may
be quick to pick up on a system that seems archaic.
In our homes, we find ourselves
constantly repeating patterns that we have completed for years.
First, we wake up, put the coffee on, let the dog out and
either head to the shower or sit down to read a paper or our
email. Take a look to see if this procedure is the best use
of your time and the best for your mind and body? Does this
procedure create for you the goal that is in your mind? Just
because it seems right at first, today I suggest that you
question it. For example, you might change it to wake up,
put runners on, walk the dog, come back and put coffee on
because you have a goal of fitness and very little time once
the day has started.
In your Easter bunny hunt reach
inside your mind. What is it that you believe about your abilities
that are no longer true? Do you still doubt your talents after
all these years of experience and training? Does the evidence
still support the belief or are you carrying old beliefs that
no longer apply?
You may be someone who works
9 to 5 and 5 days a week. You may believe that it is the only
shift available and the only way to earn a living. What if
you could work 4 days a week, maybe with longer hours or perhaps
you could work 4 days a week and take one day to open a new
type of business for yourself?
Let's take our hunt further
down the bunny trail where our fears hide our passions. What
if today you actually implemented one or two of those hidden
passion of yours instead of hiding it because you believe
it will never pay the bills? What if there was a different
way for you to earn money that was simpler for you? Like the
businessman running a large corporation that yearns to play
the fiddle not realizing that his talents could bring him
riches beyond what the corporation earns. What do you believe
about your life that may no longer hold true?
Hop on down the bunny trail
to self-discovery and unearth your hidden treasures to see
what you can change today.
Happy Easter and Happy Hunting
