FEATURE ARTICLE by Indigo Irwin
Kennedy:
- Creating Self
ALSO THIS MONTH:
- Observing
your Relationships.
-
Men and bi-polar depression.
- Can
fish oil make us feel better?
=====================================================
March Message:
Observing your relationships.
Many people are amazed to discover that they and many of their friends
and family members are Wave Riders. It may be that there friends
have not recognized their patterns before or it may be that their
pattern is so mild that it does not interrupt their lives. (I
believe that a Wave Rider's Bi-polar pattern can grow in intensity over
time.)
I have observed that many of the people surrounding me have bi-polar
tendencies from mild to manic. (Manic meaning extremely high energy and
not necessarily hallucinations). They are politicians, teachers,
computer analysts, homemakers, artists and writers and all are
creative and intelligent. (I have heard many say that they are
not intelligent because they associate the problems they have created in
their lives with their intelligence. They
have not been able to master their ride,
they have struggled so they feel inadequate, stupid and non-creative.)
Many of us simply thought that our high energy creativity is just us on
a good day...but if we look back on our lives we will see that we do have
times where nothing seems like fun anymore and we simply do not want to do
what normally gave us pleasure; we lack energy and enthusiasm. It
is usually only when the symptoms of depression get overwhelming that
we Wave Riders seek help.
Once you really have a look around at the behavior patterns of the people
around you - you may be astounded at how many people are just like you.
This is part of the reason for the evolution that we discuss in the
book, we are using more of our creative mind and taping into the source.
It is not just the people who are depressed at the moment who are acting in
a bi-polar pattern. Observation of the patterns of your friends,
family and associates will help you to create better relationships. Is
your spouse a Wave Rider or a Mid- wave thinker? If they are a
mid-wave thinker they may have a very difficult time understanding why you
react to situations the way you do. Wave Riders and Mid-wave thinkers
are equal in importance as we balance out the world but a Mid-wave thinker
has never experienced the wave you ride so it is often beyond their current
comprehension. Many Mid-wave thinkers have read The Wave Riders and
have commented that they gained a greater understanding of their
friends, spouses and children this in turn is leading to relationships.
Your Bi-polar illusion states may also alter how you view the people in
your life; they may be absolutely wonderful when you are up and
absolutely hideous when you are down...usually they are neither, they are
somewhere in between both views. You will see who they really are to
you and how you really feel about them when you are at your mid-point on the
wave neither depressed nor ecstatic, so try not to bolt out the door when
you are down or get engaged when you are up. View you life and
relationships in the middle of your wave.
Enjoy discovering the patterns of the relationships that surround
you.

Ponderings:
Men and bi-polar depression.
Almost as many men as women suffer from bi-polar depression.
The National Mental Health Association claims that men are 4 times
likely to commit suicide. Why?
Men may not reach out, may not talk about their depression and may
view their depression as a weakness of their character. They may be so busy
with business and family that they never seem to have time to talk with a
doctor and the people they do talk to just don't seem to understand.
I am happy to say that many men (more than women) are reaching out
over the Internet and ordering The Wave Riders book from our web site.
I am hoping that we are managing to reach men who would not otherwise seek
help and in doing so are helping to provide them with hope and
some answers to why they may feel the way they do.
The virtually anonymous system of ordering over the Internet may be
just the help that is needed for anyone who is too shy or too busy to
seek help in a doctor's office. The Wave Riders book is shipped in a
plain brown envelope so it is very discreet. Once the book is
read, I hope the reader feels the pride in being a Wave Rider rather than
feeling misdirected shame. Please do not hesitate in sharing the
Website information or this newsletter with the men in your life.
This is NOT a LADIES THING! We are in this one together!
Those of us who have read The Wave Riders have come to understand that we
are gifted and not diseased. We have learned to empower our gift and
take back our lives. There are so many people out there and in
particular men that have not been given this hope. They are
desperately circling their thoughts in their own minds; careers,
families and lives are destroyed.
When we do not seek some form of help we can waste
away our entire
lives in depression. It is important to seek help as
soon as possible, whether
the help you seek is in reading, talking, writing, medication or
therapy. It is important to
"get out of your own head" as you can start thinking way too
much or just be thinking about your problems at the wrong time (in the
down state).
When you do seek help remember that your doctor may never see
you
on your good, up days and may base his/her diagnosis on
your down state only. You may be diagnosed as simply
depressed rather than bi-polar because your doctor has not been told
that you are sometimes so full of energy that you have
difficulty stopping and may rob your body of rest. It is
important that you let your physician know that you have up days
(not just normal days).
A Warning:
I have watched Wave Riders who were mastering their lives go into
therapy only to begin a process of almost worshipping the depression
and wallowing in self pity and/or the past. I believe that this
type of therapy is very dangerous, as the therapy can begin to focus
on a disease called depression and you can believe you are damaged or
that you are to be pitied and relieved of the responsibility for
living because you have had a difficult life. Remember that even
though depression can be set off by a stressful, negative event
that rarely does bi-polar depression have anything to do with the
actual circumstances of your life...... bi-polar people are rich and
poor, working and unemployed, alone or surrounded by love, the
external in most cases simply does not matter.
Be good to yourself!

Research updates

Can
fish oil make us feel better?
I
believe that it is our adrenaline burn out that causes most of
our depression and I believe by avoiding the burn out and adjusting
our attitudes we will also avoid the depression however, I
also believe that it is important to consider if there is anything that our
bodies are lacking, such as a any particular group of nutrients, that
may be also causing holding us in depression.
We
have learned that our attitudes, our rest and the positive analysis
of our wave patterns can change how we feel enabling us
to avoid depression but what about the food we eat? I
know that chocolate and popcorn often give me pleasure but what relationship
does fat have to my moods?
I
found some interesting articles on the web that found that low-fat diets
may lead to depression and that fish oil can help. I have for brevity
hacked up these articles and provided only small clips... please
read the full articles to get more information and remember to check
with your doctor before trying anything new. Even seemingly harmless
vitamins and herbs can do harm if taken in the wrong amounts or in
combination with the wrong medicines.
When
I asked my local pharmacist about fish oil, he said that the Salmon
Oil supplements are better than the Cod liver or halibut oil supplements for use
in depression. He
also told me that when buses of Japanese tourists arrive
at his store they clear the shelves of Salmon Oil supplements and
he has to order more.... it is very popular.
Dieting
and depression
TUCSON, ARIZONA. Low-fat diets have been widely promoted for
lowering
cholesterol levels, for reducing body weight, and for preventing
certain
types of cancer. At least one study, however, has found that
although
a reduction in cholesterol may reduce mortality from heart
disease
it may increase the incidence of fatal
accidents, violent deaths,
suicides,
and depression....
...a
recent study in Japan found that DHA supplementation reduced
aggression
among healthy Japanese students...
The
researchers conclude that an extremely low-fat
diet may be
counter-productive
and have deleterious psychological ramifications.
They
stress that dietary advice regarding cholesterol reduction, weight
loss,
and cancer prevention should emphasize the importance of an
adequate
intake of omega-3 fatty acids...
Fish
Oil and Margarine
Half
the volunteers were kept on a diet high in linoleic acid by using
margarine
as a spread and polyunsaturated oils for cooking. The
other
half used butter and olive oil which are low in linoleic acid. The
experiment
clearly showed that the incorporation of fish oil is
enhanced
by a diet containing butter and fish oil. Margarine and
polyunsaturated
oils had an inhibiting effect and should therefore
be
excluded from the diet in order to obtain maximum benefit
from
fish oil.

Fish oils: A cure for
depression?
WASHINGTON, DC. ... The brain
consists pretty well entirely of fat so clearly one's fat intake could
affect one's brain composition... There is also evidence that low levels
of omega-3 fatty acids are associated with low levels of the mood
hormone serotonin... Fish, particularly fatty ocean fish, is an excellent
source of omega-3 fatty acids...At least three clinical trials have
observed a marked improvement in depressed patients given relatively high
doses of fish oils...there are at least 10 clinical trials underway
evaluating fish oils in the treatment of depression, attention deficit
disorder, and schizophrenia.
Small, Meredith F. The happy fat. New Scientist, August 24, 2002, pp.
34-37 Editor's comment: Daily supplementation with 1-3 grams of a high
quality fish oil is entirely safe and may not only improve your mood, but
help protect you from heart disease, stroke and arthritis as well.

Today's Gentle Reminder
=====================================================
As you are learning to ride the wave remember:
The rules do not change. Once you have mastered your ride and you
have the clear intention of setting your life on the right track you will
begin to think that you can do more...it is an old trap...only this time you
will think, "I know what I am doing this time" and you do know
what you
are doing only, the rules still do not change. Your personal rules of
getting enough rest and making life altering decisions mid-wave, do not
change. Break the rules and you will end up in the same place as you did
every time you broke the rules before.
Work endless hours and give up on needed rest and you will spend at
least twice the time in the down time. In other words...work three
days
virtually non-stop and you may be down for around 1 week...work a 6 month
period of 12 hour days and you can expect to battle the "comforts of
depression" for up to, maybe...an entire year!
This does not mean that you are depressed the entire time, but you will
experience the down and dormant time to make up for the expenditure of
energy that was depleted rather that paced and re-nourished. You will
however, re-enter the depression if you begin to think the depressed
thoughts that really have no actual relevance to your situation.
Remember the tired child syndrome....temper tantrums, tears and
the poor me thoughts.
Remember to avoid getting overtired... when things are going good get
rest; do not wait for the down time to catch up. Eat properly and give
yourself your TLC. With pacing your creative thought and energy you
will be able to continue productivity without having to go dormant.
Unfortunately, we may all have to break these rules again at least once
after reading the book; perhaps it is a testing of the rules and our
boundaries. You will quickly learn
however, that the same patterns produce the same old results. Breaking
those old habits will take time so when you find yourself, back on the floor
wanting to give up...just remember what got you there and decide to do better
next time. Give yourself the time to heal again, without guilt as guilt
will only prolong healing. Do what you can, don't take on extra work and
keep doing what needs to be done no matter how small and insignificant it may
appear as this too builds confidence again.
"Give yourself the right to treat yourself well!"

This month's quote has been supplied by my wonderful and wise

I see that the circumstances of one’s birth are irrelevant.
It
is what you do with the gift of life that determines who you are.

Creating Self
Indigo Irwin Kennedy's 2nd book "Pratical Spirit"
This book is being compiled and is not yet available.
...When we can achieve our dreams, but we do not, because we doubt
or we fear, then we short-change our time on earth. We simple
stay
safe but we do not empower our gift. These safe paths can plant the
seeds of regret; and regret is what I fear more than failure.
We can
achieve our dreams even if we have to achieve them in smaller portions
and at a slower pace...

Question and Answers
=====================================================
Question:
- What do you mean by the up and the down illusion?
Answer:
To give a short answer this question I believe that while we are
on
our up ride, filled with energy, we are heavily influenced by the
adrenaline and lack of oxygen in our bodies so the world looks better
than it might look to you on the Mid-wave. When we are
burned out and
depressed we are again chemically influenced in that we are now
low on serotonin. Neither state is your real world, they are
both illusions,
yet here, during these illusions we try to make decisions that effect
our lives.
Your real world exists Mid-wave when you are neither riding on an
adrenaline high or a wallowing in a serotonin low.
